Grammar preparing for hungry Griffins

-

RUGBY UNION: Four successive O’Callaghan Cup wins is a proud record to defend, and Toowoomba Grammar School faces that task today as it looks to keep a hungry Downlands at bay in their 2018 clash.

The record books show Grammar has had the better of the Griffins since 2014 but with a four-point win in 2016 followed by last year’s nail-biting victory today’s clash promises to produce another typical, tight tussle.

But Grammar First XV captain Tom Cole is relying on a “simple” approach working best for his team today as it looks to extend its recent cup domination.

“On the day you never know,” Cole said when asked of his match prediction.

“We just rock up and play rugby. There’s an inevitability about it so we’ll just see what happens.”

Grammar begins its 2018 GPS campaign next week and goes into the Cup this year with only trial matches under its belt which Cole believes will have little bearing on today’s contest.

“Trial matches are trial matches,” Cole said.

“We’ve done heaps of preparation.

“We’re looking pretty good. We’re confident.”

Cole, along with a host of team-mates is hoping to farewell his TGS rugby days with a Cup victory.

“It’s a massive thing. That’s why I play rugby, for the mates and it’s going to be a pretty special thing being side-by-side with everyone playing a good game of footy,” Cole said.

“We’ve got a fair few experienced boys. It’s a bit of mixture as well. We’ve got a couple of young pups, but it’s a good mixture.

“I love the school. I’ve been here four years now and it’s a great way to end my Year 12.”
