Alana up for pin-up contest
Artist heading to Greazefest soon
ALANA Wilkie’s childhood was filled with custom hot rods, classic dresses and 1950s music – and she loved every minute of it.
The Toowoomba artist and fashionista will be centre-stage at the southern hemisphere’s biggest celebration of greaser culture, GreazeFest in Cleveland next month.
Along with displaying her artwork at the festival, Ms Wilkie has also entered one the pin-up contests during the weekend.
She said her family has been fully involved with hot rod and rockabilly culture since she could remember.
“My dad and brother build hot rods and my mum runs a business around it, and I do a lot of art commissions for hot rods,” she said.
“I think it’s classic (style) – people love the fashion, the silhouettes.
“Those dresses are still beautiful today, whereas fashion from other decades don’t look as good now. I think they’re timeless.”
On top of pin-up stars, GreazeFest will feature three days of rockabilly music, vintage markets, tattooists, tiki carvers, pinstripers and hot rod displays on August 3-5.
Organiser Lori Lee Cash said the event attracted more than 10,000 people every year.
“19 years ago, we decided to create an event that saw likeminded folk get together to enjoy classic cars, vintage culture and rockabilly music,” she said.
“It’s evolved into a massive event, that has become a highlight on many people’s calendars – our community is full of friendly, colourful characters, and we expect this year’s festival to be bigger and bolder than ever.”
