Top jazz band heads up the Range

-

FORMED in 1977, the Caxton Street Jazz Band takes its name from the famous hotel where the band had an 11-year stint.

The group is recognised locally and internationally as one of Australia’s leading jazz bands

During the past 40 years, members have changed a number of times but four of the six current musicians have been with the group since 2001.

While the band’s roots are in the music of the early 20th century, many other influences are represented in its output.

These include big band swing, mainstream jazz, folk, country, rhythm and blues as well as popular tunes of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. The band sets out to give their music a soft new edge that appeals to modern audiences.

Personnel include John Braben (trumpet), Paul Williams (clarinet and tenor sax), Tom Nicholson (trombone, banjo, vocals), Bernice Haydock (piano and vocals), Andrew Shaw (double bass) and Dave McCallum (drums). This is an impressive mix of talented musicians whose timing and rapport with each other is impeccable.

Their Toowoomba performance will be on Friday, July 27, from 7.45–11pm at the North Toowoomba Bowls Club. Meals are available from 6–7.15pm.

Door prices are $20 for visitors and $15 for Jazz Society members. Group concessions apply.

Bookings can only be made for people who come for a meal as well. Email info@toowoombajazz.com or phone 0428 746 272 or 4635 5728. For more information, visit www.toowoombajazz.com.
