SMALL businesses stand to reap the benefits of the Toll Group operating domestic freight services from Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport.

Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce CEO Jo Sheppard said the five weekly services linking the Garden City to the Toll Priority domestic network would deliver a boost to the region, and small businesses in particular.

“There will be a definite flow-on for small business in Toowoomba which rely on freight in a timely and reliable manner,” she said.

“This is going to boost that quite significantly, so it is very exciting.”

Wellcamp airport Commercial Manager - Cargo Robert Kasch said the domestic freight arm of the facility had grown on the back of international freight services.

“Freight volumes have been growing on the international service so it is timely that Wellcamp airport is now able to offer a domestic freight service,” he said.

“This new service will enable Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport to offer airport-to-airport time-critical freight services on the next available flight (or express overnight service) to most locations in Australia and major business centres in New Zealand.”

“This service is backed by an unrivalled air freight network which enables Toll to deliver to almost every location in Australia.”

The flights came into effect on Monday.

Toll’s services include the capability to monitor cargo during all phases of transport, and opens up access to daily commercial and freighter aircraft movements.

The Australian arm of the international company offers express cargo on domestic animals such as dogs, cats and live fish, and has access to airport chiller facilities at most locations which opens up perishable cargo options.

Ms Sheppard said Toll operating from Toowoomba further solidified the city’s position as a transport and logistics hub which would in turn boost .

“I think it is a real show of confidence from a global player that Wellcamp, Toowoomba and our region has a really strong future as a freight and logistics hub,” she said.

“It is a real coup and exciting, not just for Toowoomba but for the region.

“Freight is something that isn’t seen by everyone unless you work in the industry or are in a business that is reliant on it.”

The domestic freight service will complement the current international Cathay Pacific service which flies direct to Hong Kong each week.
