Toowoomba to RizeUp for cause
RUGBY LEAGUE: Toowoomba’s rugby league community is preparing to Rize Up for those in need.
This weekend will see the entire Central Division get involved in RizeUp round, an organisation helping individuals and families impacted by domestic violence.
This will mark the second year of the Toowoomba Rugby League seniors and juniors involvement with the group, and TJRL publicity officer Wyatt Cook-Revell said it was an important message being spread across the region.
“In an environment we live in at the moment, not only for rugby league clubs but the broader community, we recognise we don’t do that here, and rise up against it,” Cook-Revell said.
“I think it’s important that everyone has an understanding that violence is never okay.
“It’s not okay on the football field, it’s not okay at home.
“The TJRL thought it was important to continue support of the organisation by having another RizeUp round in conjunction with senior league and board of Central Rugby League.”
Central Division operations manager Jodie Teys approved of the move.
“Rize Up is a charity that helps re-house people that need to get away from where they are living due to domestic violence,” Teys said.
“When they are found houses to move into they are empty, so it helps to turn it into a home, and people aren’t sleeping on a mattress on the floor when they walk in.
“Last year the Central Division helped furnish 96 different houses, and now it has gone state-wide.”
Teys said items of any size or stature helped towards the important cause.
“There was a good response last year and there were a lot of clubs donating items,” she said.
“Things as small as a scented candle or a packet of pegs help. People can give whatever they to help fill a house up.”
Donations can be brought to TRL and TJRL grounds this weekend, or dropped into the TRL office at 6 Cress St between 8.30am and 4.30pm on weekdays throughout August.
