Practice what you Preature

- Seanna Cronin

PLAYING as the support act to a former boy-band member might seem like an odd fit for The Preatures, but the Sydney rockers are full of praise for Harry Styles.

The four-piece played four big arena shows with the former One Directioner, who is apparently a fan, earlier this year.

“A few years ago, he tweeted something at us about a song of ours that he was listening to that he really liked,” guitarist Jack Moffitt says.

“It was kind of cool to see somebody who was in control of their little zone (on social media) so much that they could reflect on something they were listening to.”

The Preatures, best known for their award-winning song Is This How You Feel?, headlined The Big Pineapple Music Festival before hitting the road for a massive 40-date national tour.

The band is in the very early stages of working on music for their next album, the follow-up to last year’s themed record Girlhood.

“We’ve been working on a few things. I keep tyring to push everybody to put them into the set, but there’s a little trepidation. Hopefully, at least one new song will be in there.

“I can’t tell at this point (what the next album will sound like).

“At our third album, isn’t this the point where we start to f--- with our identity?

“I don’t think I could do the same thing again ... I want to make a crazy dance album and put guitars on it, but that’s what I feel like doing. In the writing, we may find we make another somewhat political album.”

Moffitt is more than just the band’s guitarist. The Cairns native also recorded and produced Girlhood, but describes himself as an accidental producer.

“It was just by virtue of the fact that we work all the time,” he says.

“Often something is happening and it’s like you can’t stall the process to try to organise getting someone else involved. It’s by happenstance that I’ve become a producer.

“I’ve taken to it and I enjoy the responsibility. I don’t think I could let go of that 100 per cent. There would always be a part of my brain that would be thinking about it.”
