‘Fab five’ fit right in on the Immortals list

-

AMAZINGLY Wednesday night’s NRL Immortals announcement has drawn just as much criticism as it has praise.

So far no-one has questioned Dally Messenger, Frank Burge, Dave Brown, Norm Provan and Mal Meninga’s place among league’s best players.

However, I see a lot of people questioning the decision to add five players this time round instead of the traditional two.

I think it was the right decision – in fact I think it was a fantastic decision.

I find it bizarre that the five players in question – players that wrote the history and shaped the future of rugby league – had to wait so long to take their place among the Immortals.

They deserve to be on the list especially when you consider it was only a set of “arbitrary rules” denying them the special honour.

I also believe their selection goes a long way to righting a wrong of sorts.

Regardless of your views on his drug use, there is no questioning the playing ability and influence of Andrew Johns – he deserves his place among the Immortals.

But I firmly believe he was named too soon.

In my mind any of Messenger, Burge, Brown or Provan should’ve been named before Johns.

The next logical step for me would’ve been to name Meninga, Johns and Darren Lockyer.

Speaking of Lockyer, he has to be the next Immortal right?

Matildas’ magic

I’ve often sung the praises of the Matildas – our national women’s football team for those of you not in the know. But as much as I love them – their performances still mesmerise me.

We were the last team to beat the US before they went on a 17-game unbeaten run and we were minutes away from beating them this week. Get on them (the Matildas) for the World Cup – I’ve got a feeling.
