‘Emusing’ video goes viral
Drone mustering clip booms online in hours
WHEN 23-year-old Angus Gebhardt was using a drone to muster some emus out of a paddock of barley, he never thought the video footage would go viral.
The “emusing” clip was filmed on his 2832 hectare family property in 15 kilometres south of Burra, South Australia.
“The emus were quite inquisitive and I thought ‘this is actually quite funny’,” he said.
“So I had a bit of a play around with iMovie and I always loved John Williamson, so his song Old Man Emu just sprung to mind.
“To shoot and edit the video only took me around two hours, but I pretty much winged it.”
He said the amount of kangaroos and emus hanging around was extraordinary.
“It’s been pretty dry in areas and we’re no different,” he said.
“The Burra Creek runs through our property and they’ve been coming through to get some of the feed from Video creator Angus Gebhardt. there.”
When the stray long-legged birds got stuck in the paddock, Angus thought it was the perfect opportunity to muster them out with the drone.
“The paddock they were in was the one where we planted barley in May,” he said.
“I’ve never had to do it before in my life so it was a bit of a first for me.
“We got the drone originally to muster sheep because sometimes it’s too treacherous for the motorbikes.”
Angus said his friend prompted him to make the video public.
“I had it on private and he said ‘change it to public this could go viral’ so I changed it the next morning and by 5.30pm the video had more than 150,000 views,” he said.
“It’s still slowly climbing too.”
He said it was a good feeling to know people were getting enjoyment out of his video.
“People seem to be loving it,” he said.
“If I can put smiles on their faces that makes me happy.”
