THE WIN

YOU have to love it when a plan comes together. Toowoomba trainer’s Steve Tregea’s thinking outside the square reaped huge rewards when Bergerac ate up the open spaces of Randwick on Saturday to post a gutsy win in the Benchmark 82 Handicap.

THE TRAINER

NEW season; familiar results with premier trainer Ben Currie kicking off the new Clifford Park racing year with a lazy stable treble from Faolan, Shakira and Occhilupo.

THE RIDER

NORTHERN NSW apprentice Leah Kilner continues to fill a yawning Clifford Park claiming-apprentice gap and continued her good visiting strike-rate with wins aboard Currie pair Faolan and Occhilupo.

FROM THE STAND

Race 1: There was small specking for Bernie’s Tiger at 5.50. The on-track bookie bet 1.50 on Faolan and he was lucky the “Fireman” was long gone. When they straightened for home Faolan showed them a clean pair of heels for the easiest win you will ever see.

Race 2: Tony Sears must have let the tip out for Real Patriot. They backed it off course and the money came back on track with good money at 3 before it was backed into 2.25 at start time. There was small specking for Miss Moss at 7.50. John Wallace produced Cossie in great order. The bookies got to cheer home Cossie to save them the big payouts. How times have changed.

Race 3: Here the favourite in Cantillate was easy to lay at 2.60. There was good money for Wake Up Jeff at 6.50. The winner in The Barracuda was backed on track at 14 and this gave bookies a break-square result.

Race 4: Here the bookie got to lay a few runners. There was specking for Kimhorsedashian and Dances With Time at odds. Rock Garden was hard to lay and was 2.50 on track with few takers. The winner Dynamisante was backed off course from 4.40 into 3.50. The money came back on track with a phone bet of $700 each-way at 4.20 for a bad result for the track bookie.

Race 5: Emtevee Queen was the first horse backed and the money went on at 4.40. The track bookie then risked Shakira and went 2.20. Shakira fought to the line and was another bad result for the bookie.

Race 6: Here the punters only wanted the one runner in Money Talk, backed from 3 to start at 2.60. The winner in Nivo was a good result for bookies and they were back in the game.

Race 7: A small field with a lot of interest. In the end the punters to a man backed Occhilupo from 1.90 into 1.60 and sent the bookies home losers.
