Milne Bay Museum says thanks

- MATTHEW NEWTON Matthew.Newton@thechronicle.com.au

AFTER pounding the city’s pavement seven days a week for two months straight, Milne Bay Military Museum committee member Carl Kuhn wants to say thanks.

Hit with an eviction notice in July, the museum has until September 28 to vacate its premises on Defence land.

But the committee wouldn’t go down without a fight, starting a petition - with a target of 20,000 signatures - to have the Department of Defence bequeath the Milne Bay Military Museum and the land it sits on to the Toowoomba community.

A mammoth effort from Mr Kuhn saw him gather thousands of signatures by himself, and the committee is within spitting distance of 18,000 sig- natures on their petition.

The petition will be presented to Groom MP Dr John McVeigh later this afternoon. Dr McVeigh has agreed to take the petition to Canberra though he has his own doubts as to its success.

“I would like to thank everyone who signed the petition to keep the Milne Bay Military Museum in its present location,” Mr Kuhn said.

“The support was wonderful and I personally found that 90% of those canvassed signed this petition.”

Committee president Marian Jones said the committee and museum members also wanted to thank the nearly 18,000 people who signed and supported the petition.

“We’d also like to thank the efforts of Carl Kuhn - he walked the streets of Toowoomba for many weeks.”
