REPORTS of animal abuse are on the rise in Toowoomba and the Western Downs, with the number of cases jumping nearly 10 per cent in the past year.

Staff at RSPCA Queensland, who are currently collating data for their annual animal abuse report, have revealed to The Chronicle that the southern region is a hot spot for incidents.

In the past financial year, 1100 cases of animal abuse were reported in Toowoomba and the Western Downs, up 96 cases from the previous year.

Drought and social media have been listed as potential contributing factors to the increase, with more reports being lodged over the internet.

“It’s hard to understand people’s motivation to commit acts of cruelty against animals,”

‘‘ IT’S HARD TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE’S MOTIVATION TO COMMIT ACTS OF CRUELTY AGAINST ANIMALS.

RSPCA Qld spokesperson Rosy Lone said.

“It’s unfortunate the number has increased again this year.

“We encourage everyone to stay vigilant and report any cruelty to our hotline.

“We can't know about an animal in need unless somebody calls us, or they get caught.

“Once somebody gets caught we can keep an eye on them, but until then we don't know what is going on.”

Residents with animal welfare concerns are urged to contact the cruelty hotline on 1300 264 625.
