Penalty seals victory for footballers

FOOTBALL: An extra-time penalty helped Toowoomba Grammar School secure a dramatic 2-1 Bill Turner Cup victory on Wednesday.
Dylan Proctor’s 73rd minute strike broke the deadlock with Palm Beach-Currumbin State High after the scores were locked 1-1 at full-time.
Having successfully defended their Queensland title, the team now advances to the semi-final stage of the national competition.
“The tournament is number one for schoolboys in Australia,” Grammar coach Chris McLeod said.
“We’re very proud to represent Queensland and hopefully we can give a good account of ourselves.”
Grammar booked their place in the Queensland final after defeating Kawana Waters State College 2-1 on Tuesday.
“Kawana were very difficult opponents,” McLeod said.
“But we did enough to basically win the game by half-time and then hang tough for the second half.
“Today (Wednesday) Palm Beach were a completely different kettle of fish.
“Palm Beach Currumbin run a great program. They’re very well coached and we knew we were in for a really tough day at the office.
“But the boys found something extra in their pockets to get the winner.”
Grammar captain Ben Moore said the team was excited by their win but wouldn’t be resting on their laurels.
“We grinded it out and got a penalty at the end – it felt amazing and it was really good to win,” he said.
“The finals will be good. We’ve just got to train hard as a team and work hard before our next games.”
