FOOTBALL: Another spirited performance has helped the South West Queensland Thunder women secure backto-back wins for the first time this season.

Facing Mudgeeraba at Clive Berghofer Stadium on Saturday, the Thunder were once again forced to fight back from a goal down (twice) to secure the 3-2 victory.

Elizabeth Charleson opened the scoring for the visitors in the seventh minute after the Thunder defence failed to adequately clear a corner.

Teen striker Chloe Hutton, promoted to the starting lineup after her goal-scoring cameo last week, had the Thunder back on levels terms soon after though.

Fighting for a loose ball in the Mudgeeraba penalty area Hutton tucked home her shot to make it 1-1 with ten minutes on the clock.

Shelby White put the visitors back in front at the 23rd minute mark before Mel Lloyd dragged the Thunder back into the game four minutes from half-time.

Stealing the ball inside the Thunder’s attacking half, Lloyd’s long range shot dipped over the keeper to level the scores.

Thunder coach Scott Teakle had high praise for his side but said they were their own worst enemies at times.

“The goals we conceded were off our own mistakes,” he said.

“We didn’t clear the ball from the corner for the first one and we gave away an unnecessary free kick for the second. It’s a shame Liz (Thunder keeper Elizabeth Hollitt) was injured earlier in the game - I think she would’ve got to the second shot otherwise.

“We kept up our intensity though – which was something we talked about.

“We felt if we could keep the pressure on them they’d tire toward the end.

“On another day we could’ve scored a few more – their keeper made some really good saves.

“We spent most of the second half in our attacking third and created plenty of chances.

“Aside from a few short periods I thought we were fairly dominate.”

Madison Franke scored the winner in the 53rd minute.
