Willowburn’s 3-2 win over Rockville capped off a remarkable regular season for the women’s team.

The Magpies victory over Rovers saw them finish the regular season with a perfect unbeaten record – taking the maximum 54 points on offer from their games.

The spectre of an unbeaten season affected the performance of his team, according to Willowburn coach Steve Pennells.

“I don’t think we were at our best tonight,” Pennells said.

“I think we were more focused on the fact we’d gone through the season without dropping a game and I think that was in the back of the girls’ minds.

“Basically we weren’t at our normal structured self. We were more focused on winning the game rather than going out and doing the things we need to do to win the game.

“But having said that, I’ve been involved in Toowoomba football for over 50 years and I can’t remember any side going through the season without dropping a point.

“We’ll definitely celebrate that.”

Pennells believes the game will serve his team well heading into finals.

“Both Kiama (Gray) and Shannon (Tyrrell) weren’t at their best today,” Pennells said.

“We did not have the midfield for the whole 90 minutes of this game.

“But for the rest of the girls

to pull together and come away with the three points is a great effort.

“We addressed the negatives at half-time and then we addressed the positives. The biggest positive for us was we were still creating chances.

“They (Gray and Tyrrell) are both experienced players –

they know what they’ve done right and wrong.

“And they and the team will be better for it because that’ll be in the back of their minds so they’ll click into gear and the rest of the girls will step up around them.”
