Your thoughts on waterpark
AN ONLINE debate has started about whether or not a waterpark is needed for Toowoomba.
The question of why Toowoomba is not home to one has again been brought up, since it was announced a new waterpark would be built in Rockhampton just in time for summer.
In an ongoing online poll The Chronicle asked readers if a new venue would be beneficial for Toowoomba.
With more than 500 votes 70% have said yes.
More than 80 people also joined the discussion when we posed the question on Facebook.
Many said they were still hoping a waterpark was on the cards for Toowoomba, while others said it wasn’t a sensible choice considering the state was going through a drought.
Helena Avila said: “Why do people think that a waterpark is only outside? There are indoor waterparks that can be heated.”
Kym Colman said: “For those whinging it would only get used six months use a year,
it could be a facility built with winter activities too.”
More than 20 people agreed with Terry Crouther’s comment against the proposal.
“The country is in the grip of drought, to build a water park at the moment is not a good idea,” he said.
“I know most waterparks recycle most of their water, but that first amount to open is all fresh water and we can not afford it at the moment.”
Jeannie Johnston said: “Not the wisest of decisions. Apart from insensitivity to those suffering from drought and places being placed on water restrictions, it would be a waste of money and stand idle for nine months of the year.”
Brenda Harper also made people aware of the Facebook petition page “Toowoomba needs a waterpark,” where more than 1200 people share their reasons for wanting more aquatic summer activities in Toowoomba.
The Rockhampton venue will open at Discovery Parks in December and the project will feature slides, a dump bucket and toddler area.
Discovery Parks at Rockhampton already features a pool setting, and the waterpark development is a response to strong guest demand.
