Five charged over spree
Dangerous ‘convoy’ of stolen cars stopped in city
A FIFTH person has been arrested and two more last night remained on the run after a crime spree that started in New South Wales and terrorised Toowoomba streets earlier this week.
Police swarmed on a Glenvale address late on Wednesday night after a tip-off from the public about a possible stolen car in the area.
Toowoomba Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Sergeant Paul McCusker said one man was arrested and charged in connection with a crime spree in the city earlier that day, ending with the dramatic arrest of four people inside Grand Central.
A red Mazda sedan stolen during a Geoffrey St burglary in Mount Lofty was seen in Glenvale, Snr-Sgt McCusker said.
“As a result of attending that address, a cordon was set up and as a result three male persons have run from the car,” he said.
The 17-year-old yesterday appeared in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court.
The teen is the fifth person charged over a spate of crimes which started earlier in the week when a red Izuzu ute was stolen from Moree in New South Wales.
Snr-Sgt McCusker said the ute was traced to Goondiwindi then to Toowoomba where it was linked to a burglary in Mount Lofty from where two cars were stolen.
“Both those cars were seen to be travelling in what we would describe as a convoy around the area,” he said.
“It is something that we are concerned about but as a result of the work of the police, and also information received from members of the community and the great work by PolAir, we were able to bring these people before the court.
“The driving of the persons involved in both the vehicles in the last 24 hours is a grave concern to us and police are always very mindful of how we try to intercept these people to make sure we don’t put the public at risk.”
Police are yet to recover the red Izuzu D-Max dual-cab ute, with Victorian registration 11D8UX.
