Staving off that dreaded cold before it pays a visit

-

THERE seems no way to avoid it, there on the horizon lies the dreaded cold and flu season, and you can be sure that a friend or family member will do you the honour of passing on the germ to someone in your household.

There are things you can do, however, to prevent the aching head, streaming nose and horrible congestion that we know so well around this time of year.

Remember that when it comes to colds and flu, prevention is better than cure.

The flu vaccine is an excellent way to prevent the not-soenjoyable influenza virus taking hold.

While the common cold usually lasts a week or two, the influenza virus lasts two weeks or more and exhibits more severe symptoms.

For the common cold there is no vaccine as yet, and if you don’t look after yourself, symptoms can mature into other forms of illness such as bronchitis, pneumonia or sinusitis.

Here are a couple of tips to prevent catching a nasty cold.

■ Keep surfaces in your home wiped downs regularly.

■ Make sure you and your household know to cover mouths (preferably with a tissue) when coughing or sneezing.

■ Once a tissue is used throw it straight in the bin.

■ Wash your hands regularly and especially before touching food.

■ Keep a pocket-sized hand sanitiser with you, particularly when going to the shops.

■ Make sure you have a nutritious diet high in vitamins and antioxidants, and drink lots of water. If your health continues to deteriorate contact your doctor for a professional opinion.
