IT WAS another surreal moment for the Skene family when they won Champion of Champions Pair at the Ekka this year, a first for the simmental breed.

Meldon Park Matador was part of the Champion of Champions Pair alongside Ellendale Red Supermodel. The bull also took out Grand Champion Simmental Bull for the second year in a row.

Meldon Park Simmentals also took out Champion of Champions bull at Beef Australia this year with Meldon Park Major Player.

Based in Cecil Plains, Meldon Park is run by Rodney, Lis, Bec and William Skene.

“It’s just been all good this year,” Lis Skene said.

“The simmentals have never won Champion of Champions at Ekka before.

“It just shows that the simmentals have improved so much at the last decade that they can come up and win those sorts of awards.”

Mrs Skene said this year had been the best year for the stud so far.

“We think this is the product that we’ve been aiming for for a long time,” she said.

“It does take such a long time.

“We started the stud in 1985. We started off with six cows.

“We’ve just been trying to improve since then.”

Based on 1012 hectares, Meldon Park is now home to 250 registered cows.

Mrs Skene said after such a successful year, their aim is to be consistent and continually produce good quality cattle.

She hopes the success Meldon Park has had this year will help bring some attention to the simmental breed.

“It’s getting the breed some recognition and people are actually talking about them,” Mrs Skene said.

“The simmentals also did well with the prime cattle at Beef.

“There are about 40 simmental studs in Queensland now.”

Meldon Park will be having their bull sale at Moura on September 26.

There will be 78 bulls available, including Meldon Park Matador and Meldon Park Major Player.
