More Ekka success for santa breeders
WINNING Grand Champion Santa Gertrudis Bull at Ekka was a big shock for Andrew Bassingthwaighte who wasn’t expecting his junior bull to take out the prize.
Yarrawonga H Bomb N274 (P) took out the competition for santa gertrudis Junior Champion Bull and went on to win Grand Champion.
“We had actually just run across to the prime section where we had a bit of success,” Mr Bassingthwaighte said.
“We were getting ribbons over there because we didn’t really expect that we were going to go any further here today.
“It’s been a long time since a junior bull has actually got Grand Champion in the santas so it’s a really big shock.”
Mr Bassingthwaighte said they were very lucky to win as there were so many great bulls in the competition.
“We had a European judge who’s gone for muscle and thickness,” he said.
“If it was a tropical judge who wanted growth and size, the bulls that were sitting out the back would have been up first and winning that class.
“So we were just lucky we had the right article for the judge on the day.”
Yarrawonga Cattle Co also took out Junior Champion Heifer with Yarrawonga Hummingbird N129 (P).
Mr Bassingthwaighte said they had 15 stud cattle at Ekka.
“We also had five led steers and we have a deck of fat cattle for the paddock to plate and grass fed carcass competition,” he said.
“So we have a fair few spread across the arena.”
