OUR SAY We can all do the right thing

- JASON GIBBS jason.gibbs@thechronicle.com.au

IT WARMS my heart reading about the honour bestowed on Toowoomba man Jason Emeny.

Holidaying in far north Queensland with his wife Melanie, Mr Emeny saved an elderly couple after a driving accident caused their vehicle to catch fire.

Mr Emeny extinguished the fire and helped the couple escape and has since been awarded the Commendation for Brave Conduct as part of the Australian Bravery Awards.

His reaction to the honour “you only do what you expect anyone else to do. If that was us and someone else came along, you’d expect them to help us too” makes the story all the more heart-warming.

It’s a reaction I think is very typical of men like Mr Emeny – a former members of Australia’s armed forces. My father and all of my mates who have served in the military are the exact same type of people.

People who do things because they need to be done, but then again I think that’s not just a “military thing”.

I think it’s an “Australian thing” – when times are tough we do what must be done.

Look at the amount of support generated for struggling farmers over the past week.

It’s not the type of action fitting of a bravery award – but it is the type of action that can save a life.

Times may be tough for a lot of people right now, but the likes of Mr Emeny prove Australia is the lucky country.
