Smoke haze to linger
Firefighters get control of bushfires
A LARGE bushfire near Cooyar was yesterday burning within containment lines after weary firefighters bolstered fire breaks earlier this week.
Rural Fire Service volunteers and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews yesterday continued monitoring the vegetation fire, sparked by arcing power lines on Sunday.
While it initially threatened some homes and structures in the vicinity of Fitzgerald Rd and the New England Highway, crews managed to build containment lines and prevent any loss of homes.
The bushfire is expected to continue burning for a number of days in the vicinity of Longyard Rd, East Cooyar Rd and Dukes Rd.
“Smoke may affect surrounding areas,” QFES advised.
“Residents should close windows and doors and keep their medication close by if they suffer from a respiratory condition.
“If residents are concerned their property is under threat they are advised to call Triple Zero immediately.”
It is one of a number of vegetation fires being monitored by emergency services as dry and windy conditions continue in the region.
Landowners and QFES crews were yesterday monitoring a grass fire burning in inaccessible land near Condamine River Rd at Killarney.
The fire broke out last week and has posed no threat to property.
However, the fire is expected to continue for several days with residents in the area advised to keep medications close-by.
Rural Fire Service Inspector John Welke said weekend weather conditions which had pushed up the fire risk were expected to continue through to tomorrow.
He said strong winds and the cool, dry conditions were likely to ease and reduce the fire risk.
“It’s not easing off until Thursday when we get a wind reduction and wind change,” he said.
