Cougars girls take charge

-

AUSSIE RULES: University has added another piece of silverware to its growing trophy cabinet, with the U17s girls team reigning supreme.

The Cougars ran out 13.10 (88) to 3.4 (22) winners over Downlands College in the AFL Darling Downs U17s Women’s School and Club competition.

This year saw the competition expand to include more players on the field, giving girls more playing time and a more traditional feel for the game of Australian Rules Football.

The victory marks a perfect season for University, who won all ten regular season games en route to booking their spot in the grand final.

The competition’s leading goalkicker Stella May-Charles again led the charge from the front, booting home three majors, as her side led at all changes.

AFL Darling Downs regional manager Jeff Neumann said it was deserved for their efforts throughout the season, adding to the success of their women’s side throughout the Westpac Cup.

“University are into their second season after finishing third last year and it’s a great result for a club that has developed their playing list,” Neumann said.

“They have taken their game to the next level and were basically untouchables. It’s a reward for putting in the hard yards.

“It’s showing they have some successful systems in place. Hopefully the girls would like to stick together and become senior players.”

Captain Anjelani Kibombo, Nyengela Mwajuma and Nicole Joyce Rint are among those playing at the top level for the Cougars, with Georgia Osborne playing for the Bombers in the Westpac Cup.

The grand final evening kicked off with a battle between the fifth and sixth placed sides in the competition, South Toowoomba got the better of higher-ranked opponents The Glennie School, running out 5.0 (30) to 1.3 (9) victors.

Four goals from Kartia Chin proved the tonic for Toowoomba, as they defeated Harristown State High School 10.6 (66) to 0.1 (1) in the play-off between third and fourth.
