Toowoomba boxers keen to join their mates in ring
BOXING: Toowoomba’s growing boxing ranks will expand by another two when the latest newcomers make their ring debuts this weekend.
Kevin Burford and 10-yearold Jack Hellyer will be part of a busy Saturday for Richo’s Boxing Gym fighters when they join three of their training partners at tournaments in Acacia Ridge and Caboolture.
Jack and his 13-year-old brother Sonny will take on some of Australia’s most talented young boxers when they compete at the Golden Gloves in Brisbane under the eye of trainer Brett “Richo” Richards.
At the same time Burford travels to Caboolture RSL where he appears on the card along with gym mates Maks Chylewski and Shaun Tribe.
Sonny Hellyer is looking to build on his record of five wins from seven fights at his first Golden Gloves appearance.
“Sonny and Jack are coming along brilliantly,” Richards said.
“The two boys have difference styles.
“Sonny has built a good record with his boxing skills while Jack is a very energetic boxer and is really looking forward to having his first bout.
“He is also doing well at rugby league where he’s represented Darling Downs.”
Chylewski retired from the pro ring last November but is making a one-off return at Caboolture where he’ll also be in the corner of Burford and Tribe.
“Saturday night’s card was a little light on so I decided to put my name forward to take part in an exhibition bout,” Chylewski said.
“I’m officially retired but I still love boxing and being involved at the gym where I’m now helping out Richo with the team.
“The whole boxing community is great to be a part of.
“Kev came along to the gym to gain some fitness and after losing 10kg he’s keen to have a go in the ring.
“Shaun has also done well and is coming off a win at Smithy’s show at his last fight.”
