FOR Cancer Council Queensland volunteer extraordinaire Margaret Walford, helping the cancer fighting organisation has a rehabilitative effect as well as a sense of giving back.

Mrs Walford had cancer 28 years ago but it was a heart attack four years ago that led her to volunteer with CCQ.

“I suffered anxiety as a result and I found I had to get out and do things so I started with CCQ,” she said.

“I’ve been volunteering with them for the past four years. “I love it and we have a ball.” Mrs Walford, who will turn 70 next year, spent much of this week at the CCQ daffodil stall at Clifford Gardens raising funds for the organisation.

“I’ve been here for three days from 8am to 5.15pm and I’ll be here tomorrow (today),” she said.

“We’ve had a great time and we raised $2000 yesterday.

“You meet some lovely people and there’s hardly a family that hasn’t been touched by cancer.”

Part of Mrs Walford’s CCQ volunteering includes hosting a Biggest Morning Tea and Girls Night In each year as well as standing at the Christmas gift wrapping stall at Clifford Gardens.

“I did 18 shifts of Christmas gift wrapping here at Clifford Gardens the year before last Christmas,” she said.

Mrs Walford encouraged shoppers to drop by her stand today and buy some daffodils or other memorabilia.

“I’ll be here all day so they can drop in and say hello and buy some daffodils from me,” she said.

“I’ll be here with bells on.”
