Former tradie recognised in business disability awards

-

A TOOWOOMBA tradie turned support worker has been nominated for helping people with a disability while managing his own disability.

Dane Thompson-Allen is in the running for the Outstanding Employee Award at the 2018 Business DisABILITY Awards.

The 6th Awards Gala Dinner will be held at the Armitage Centre on Thursday, September 13.

Mr Thompson-Allen was nominated for the award which recognises an employee with a disability who has demonstrated a notable attitude or effort in a workplace.

In his support worker role, he has implemented a community access program to help his clients be part of the community and access places like the shopping centre, bank and library.

“I help them to see past their disability and access their potential,” Mr Thompson-Allen said.

“Some people have trouble breaking the stigma, which they think is supposed to go with their disability.

“I try to empower them to see past their ‘can’ts’ and ‘inability’ to do something and encourage skill building and boundary pushing.”

Mr Thompson-Allen was involved in a workplace accident and seriously injured his back.

While recuperating, he learnt the value of a good diet and regular exercise and now helps his clients to improve their health and fitness.

Judging for the awards is on September 4 and the winners will be announced at an awards gala presentation dinner on September 13.

There are six award categories plus the Elissa Flanagan “Aim High” Scholarship and the Judy Antonio Memorial Award.

Nominations and entries for the awards are open until August 31.
