Bright path to academics

Concordia student wins trip for future

-

CONCORDIA Lutheran College Year 11 student Laura Knott’s dedication to her studies has paid off.

Miss Knott has been accepted into two prestigious academic programs in the coming months.

The student won a spot in the University of Queensland Young Scholars Program in November followed by the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra.

The UQ Young Scholars Program involves a five day residential camp at St Lucia in Brisbane.

Students will gain valuable insights into university life and discover different fields of study outside the school curriculum.

The academic program is completed by social, sporting and cultural activities for participants.

Miss Knott will also travel to Australian National University in Canberra in January for two weeks of STEM experiences which include experiments in the university laboratories, visiting the CSIRO and speaking with industry research professionals.

She applied to attend the two-week experience to pursue her dream of a career in science.

She was required to enter a two-part selection process which included impromptu speeches, interviews and group activities.

Miss Knott said it was amazing when things like this happen.

“You always wish for it but try not to get your hopes up, so when it actually comes true it was very exciting,” she said.

Laura plans to study an undergraduate degree in biomedical science or pharmacy followed by further postgraduate studies in medicine.

She said she was happiest when she was working in the laboratory and hopes to pursue a career in scientific research, helping to develop new drugs to cure life-threatening illnesses.
