Passion deserves respect
I AM AN unashamed geek.
I grew up watching Dr Who, the Tom Baker version, and I loved the Transformers, He-Man and Robotech cartoon series.
I’ve got a Spider-Man tattoo, my desk is littered with bobble heads, I’m a gamer and I read comics.
So naturally I was at TooCon on Saturday.
My youngest boy (he’s a geek like his dad) and I enjoyed walking around the library admiring the creativity of the cosplayers and admiring the work of the talented artists on show.
We even engaged in a little tabletop gaming using the force as we learnt the ins and outs of the Star Wars X-wing miniatures game – a game I’m probably end up buying now.
But the thing I love most about events like TooCon is how inclusive they are.
There is almost no judgment at events like TooCon.
It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, a 40-something year old professional or a young kid.
If you have a geeky passion, no matter what it is, you’re welcome at TooCon.
I have admit there were a lot of costumes that I had no idea about, but I admired the work put into them and the fact the person in question was confident to share their vision.
I only wish more places and events could be just as inclusive.
