Burgeoning talent let their hair down
STEPHANIE Raux knows what’s in style in the world of hairdressing, and she’s hoping to take her talent and knowledge to the world stage.
The Dalby apprentice hairdresser showed off her skills at TAFE South-West’s Friendly Games competition yesterday, running in three categories.
The competition is designed to give apprentices, students and trainees in the industry the chance to test themselves in a relaxed environment, ahead of the intense Worldskills series next year.
Ms Raux said her work on model Jami Austin in the “ladies fashion cut and style” category was inspired by current trends.
“I always keep up with the latest fashions and trends – crimping seems to be coming back in for the body, and the big full fringe as well. It’s adding nice structure,” she said.
“You have to have the good hair to be able to get the good finish, I guess anyone can do the structures, but it takes the finish to suit the model.
“I had a long Saturday last week working with the colour.”
Hairdressing teacher at TAFE Candy Bond said participants came from as far as Kingaroy to take part.
“This is like an easier run which helps the students to practice, because every second year we have the World Skills competition, so this is the good one to get them introduced into competition work, and hopefully they’ll move into other comps,” she said.
“We had an open barber category, which included cut, shave and tracks and carving. That’s a first for us, because we’ve now got barbering happening here at the TAFE.
“A lot of students get work out of this as well and some of our younger ones gain apprenticeships, so it’s a really good thing for the industry.”
