MOTORSPORT: On track at South Australia’s new The Bend Motorsport Park, Toowoomba’s Cameron Shields was primed for a big performance last weekend.

Driving his BF Racing Formula Ford, Shields showed good speed qualifying fourth in round five of the 2018 Australian Formula Ford Championship.

“It (qualifying fourth) was a good result,” Shields said.

“I had a lot less experience on the track than the other drivers but my team and I worked really hard and we were happy with fourth.”

Shields turned that promise into performance in race one to finish fourth before disaster struck in race two.

“I was running second when another driver hit and spun me out,” he said.

“I fell all the way back to 24th before I worked my way back to finish 13th – I finished 7th in race three after starting in 13th spot.

“It was really quite annoying because there was nothing I could do about it – the car was good. We were just very unlucky after being hit.”

Shields’ title hopes took a hit after the round but he has no plans to slow down.

“I still want to win as many races as possible,” he said.

With his South Australia performance firmly in his rear vision mirror Shields will now turn his attention to Formula 4 action this weekend at Winton, Victoria.

“This weekend is going to be pretty important – it’s a double round,” Shields said.

“We’re second in the championship so a good result this weekend means a lot.

“The forecast is rain and cold weather. It’ll be tough conditions but I’ve generally been pretty fast in the rain so it should be good.”

After the weekend, Shields’ next assignment will be in Wakefield, New South Wales for a round of the Australian Formula 3 Championship.
