Tributes for Pittsworth identity after tragedy

TRIBUTES flowed yesterday for Pittsworth icon Hughent Stone, known to his friends and fans as Hughie, after his sudden death at the weekend.

Mr Stone suffered a heart attack while driving west on Pittsworth-Felton Rd about 4.40pm on Sunday. His car veered off the road and ploughed through a fence.

Mr Stone was a long-term supporter of community events in the Pittsworth area, performing music at various functions including for the Pittsworth Lions Club.

Those who knew him paid tribute on social media.

“Have the best time playing and annoying heaven with your music and enjoy watching over the family,” one wrote. “You will be missed by plenty on this earth big man!”

Darling Downs Acting Superinten­dent Stephen Angus said investigat­ions were continuing into the tragedy.

POLICE have confirmed an elderly man who died at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Sunday suffered a medical episode moments before crashing through a fence.

Pittsworth man Hughent Stone, known to friends and fans as Hughie, was driving west on Pittsworth-Felton Rd near Pittsworth when his car veered off the road and ploughed through a barbedwire fence about 4.40pm on Sunday.

Mr Stone, who was wellknown in the region for his country music, is believed to have suffered a heart attack moments before the crash.

Police confirmed he died at the scene while his wife, who was a passenger in the car at the time, was not injured.

She did not require treatment by first-responding paramedics, police said.

Tributes flowed in on social media from those who knew Mr Stone, rememberin­g him for his country music.

“Have the best time playing and annoying heaven with your music and enjoy watching over the family,” one wrote.

“You will be missed by plenty on this earth big man!”

Another wrote: “So sorry to hear this very sad news.

“Huge loss to country music. You will be missed by many mate.”

Another person wrote: “Hughie Stone your music was an inspiratio­n to all that heard you sing.

“Your music lives on buddy.” Darling Downs Acting Superinten­dent Stephen Angus said investigat­ions were continuing into the tragedy.

Acting Supt Angus said initial inquiries indicated Mr Stone had suffered a medical episode, and a report would be prepared for the coroner.

“There are no indicators there are any other contributi­ng factors at this time, but forensic investigat­ions are continuing,” he said.
