Gundy into GF after final siren confusion

When the fulltime siren sounded, Goondiwindi thought their season was all over, thinking they had fallen by one solitary point in their preliminary final against Warwick.

However deliberation between umpires proved to have a different outcome and scores were deemed to be tied, with a five-minute period of extra time starting.

With scores tied after the first five minutes, Goondiwindi was able kick the only major in the second period, giving them a thrilling 12.10 (82) to 10.16 (76) victory, booking a grand final berth against USQ this weekend.

Former premiership winner and 200-game Hawk Ian Jones was on hand to witness the incredible sequence of events that unfolded at Rockville Oval.

“It was one of those real tight finals. It was to-and-fro all game,” Jones said.

“Warwick had the edge for the first half and Goondiwindi came back a little in the third quarter and got momentum going their way.

“It was a real arm wrestle in the fourth. Gundy got back and had their chances, but Warwick was up to the challenge.

“It came down to the last few seconds and Warwick was in front on the scoreboard by a point when the siren went.

“They had done shaking hands and gone into huddles, one to celebrate and one to console, before the umpire raised his flags and scores were level.

“It was great for Goondiwindi but heartbreaking for Warwick. I had never seen anything like it before.”

With the start of extra time, Jones said the intense battle reignited as the Hawks looked to book their third grand final berth in four years.

“It was a tough gig to come back for Warwick,” he said. “Gundy scored really quickly and then Warwick scored right at the death of extra time.

“The second period was back and forwards and David O’Toole kicked a goal late and they got through.”

In the women’s Westpac Cup, Toowoomba secured a grand final showdown with USQ after a comprehensive 10.18 (78) to 0.0. (0) defeat of South Toowoomba. After opening up a 38-point lead at the main break, the Tigers were relentless as they gun for their fourth straight title.
