Bromeliad club ready for show

-

MEMBERS from the Toowoomba and Districts Bromeliad Society are preparing for their annual show during the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.

Toowoomba and Districts Bromeliad Society secretary Susan Janetski said she was excited to meet other gardeners at the show.

“This will be the fourth show the club has hosted,” Mrs Janetski said.

“It’s a great time to be able to engage with other gardeners and to encourage the culture of bromeliads.

Mrs Janetski’s mother-inlaw gave her some plants which was the start of her love for bromeliads.

“After my mother-in-law’s introduction, I ended up going

to a plant show and that was when I fell in love with guzmanias.”

Bromeliads are members of a plant family known as Bromeliaceae which includes pineapples and Spanish moss.

Mrs Janetski said the club started four years ago and met at her house.

“The club has grown a lot bigger since it started. We now have 45 members ,” she said.

“The ages of our members varies with our youngest member being 13 and our oldest member is 84.

“I have always classified myself as a lazy gardener because I am not a fan of plants that are particularly fussy.

“Bromeliads are easy plants to look after. They’re drought resistant and have vibrant flowers which last for six months.”

The club meets regularly at members’ gardens to see how other members grow their plants and exchange tips and tricks.

There will be two speciality stands this year from Talbot Lodge Bromeliad Nursery and Simply Succulents Australia.
