Toowoomba club stalwarts chip in to claim The Chronicle Cup

-

GOLF: The annual Chronicle Cup has been run and won for another year with four Toowoomba Golf Club stalwarts claiming the 2018 trophy.

The Chronicle Cup was traditionally held the first Saturday in October at the Middle Ridge club and dates back to 1996.

It was first staged as an individual event with Peter Rookas taking out the inaugural cup with 33 points in a scratch stableford.

But due to recent club event calendar changes and the introduction of the Queen’s Birthday holiday on the first Monday of October is has moved to the first Saturday in September.

The cup is now a team event with the best three net scores from the four-player teams tallied with the lowest total winning.

More than 150 players braved blustery conditions to contest this year’s cup with Bruce Volp, Gary Krause, Ray Cole and Mark MacDermott coming out on top.

The event was played in conjunction with the club’s September monthly medal.

Volp capped his good day with success also in his Bgrade division while Cole finished runner-up in Saturday’s regular A-grade competition. TGC general manager Johnathon Zirkler said the club planned to build on the cup’s new timeslot in 2019.

“The Chronicle Cup is an iconic event on our calendar and I hope that we can look to grow it next year through an increase in patronage,” Zirkler said.
