Inner-city suburb poised to get first hardware shop

-

A NEW trade and hardware supplies store could be coming to an inner-city suburb of Toowoomba, as part of a new development.

The council will look over a new application from Coonan Industries to build a “hardware and trade supplies” store on Pechey St in South Toowoomba, just down the road from the public hospital.

According to plans put forward by Precinct Urban Planning’s Paul Kelly, the development will be split into two tenancies, including a warehouse as a second shop.

“The final development will be built to boundary on the northern and southern side boundaries and rear western boundary with carparking, access and landscaped areas within the front setback which comprises 19.3m,” he wrote.

“The building will be slab on ground construction with tiltup panel concrete walls that will include a textured finish to the front eastern elevation visible from the street.”

The site currently features a warehouse, which is home to a MotoGear supply shop.

But the applicant wants to demolish the current building and replace it with a new structure.

The council will look at the proposal as code-assessable, meaning public consultation is not directly sought.

South Toowoomba doesn’t currently have a hardware store, with the nearest one being a Mitre 10 in Darling Heights.

The council’s decision on the proposal is expected later this year.
