Chairs to help some of Toowoomba’s most sick cancer patients

SOME of Toowoomba’s sickest cancer patients will be able to experience some relief after the donation of two “princess” chairs.

Toowoomba Hospital Cancer Centre nurse unit manager Andrea Barber said the chair would help patients who did not possess the strength to be seated in a conventional chair.

“It gives them an alternative to lying in bed,” Ms Barber said.

“They’re also a pressure-relieving device and was absolutely something we needed.”

The chairs were bought by the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation after a $5300 donation from Pittsworth resident Venessa Cronin.

“I rang the hospital on a whim one day and asked if there were any programs a donation would go towards,” Ms Cronin said.

“They pointed me towards the Hospital Foundation and I didn’t look back.

“A fair few friends and family of mine have fallen in with cancer, and I just decided to shave my head to raise funds.”

Ms Cronin said she had set herself a goal of $5000 and was beyond happy she cracked that target.

“The town really got behind me,” she said.

Ms Barber said the Cancer Centre was always looking for different kinds of equipment to improve patient care.

“We’re always very grateful for any donations to the cancer centre,” she said. “People put in a lot of effort to make donations and it helps us buy equipment we really need for patients.

“These chairs willbe very well used.”
