Wheels come off inter-city spree

-

A MAN was charged with a string of serious offences after a number of police cars were allegedly rammed with a stolen vehicle after a chase in Toowoomba.

Police will allege the crime spree began on September 12, after the man attempted to steal a car at knifepoint on Astor Terrace in Spring Hill, Brisbane.

However the 39-year-old driver managed to escape unharmed in his vehicle.

The next day, the same man is alleged to have threatened an 80-year-old woman with a knife on Wickham Terrace in Spring Hill before stealing her brown Mercedes Benz.

On Sunday, police observed the stolen Mercedes parked on Primrose Parade in Wynnum West and approached the male driver.

The man then allegedly rammed the parked police vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Late on Sunday, about 5.40pm, Toowoomba police saw the same stolen Mercedes parked at the rear of a Newtown shopping centre.

The car again fled, allegedly damaging police vehicles in the process.

Police began a pursuit of the stolen vehicle through numerous streets in the Toowoomba area before hitting it with tyre stingers on Bridge St.

The vehicle allegedly continued to travel at high speed on all four rims along Anzac Ave, again colliding with another two police cars before losing control and coming to a stop.

Police arrested the driver at the scene.

A 27-year-old Wynnum West man has been charged with 14 offences including two counts of serious assault police and dangerous operation of a vehicle, and one count each of armed robbery, attempted armed robbery, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving, possessing dangerous drugs, possessing tainted property, possessing property expected to commit a drug offence, enter premises and commit indictable offence.
