Colour has a major impact on our lives so it’s important to consider the environment around us, including climate when choosing colour schemes for our homes.

1. PALETTE PLAY

Colours that sit on the cool side of the colour wheel, like blues, greens and even light greys, are more suited to the Queensland and northern New South Wales climates. They balance out the heat and recede into the background to create a calming effect. And by painting your interiors in a single colour, it will give a feeling of uniformity and flow.

2. SOME LIKE IT HOT

Colours on the warm side of the colour wheel, like reds, oranges and yellows, can actually make a room feel warmer and work well in cold climates. In a warm climate, they can make a space feel hot and oppressive.

If bright colour isn’t your thing, you can achieve the same feel by selecting neutrals, such as grey tones for cool and brown tones for warm. Then add the matching accessories – reds and oranges for warm or blues and greens for cool – to create your perfect room.

3. THE RIGHT WHITE

Many whites and neutrals have an underlying base colour. There are whites with grey, blue and even green undertones. These have a cooler, crisper feel that can really make a room feel bright and open.

Then there are warmer whites, known as stone and cream whites. These will bring warmth and brightness to your walls if your room doesn’t get much sunlight. Be careful not to use a cream white in a room with too much sunlight, however, as it can look a bit yellow.

Making brush outs of the different samples allows you to move them from room to room at different times of day.
