City man seeks to counsel Council
Daryl really loves Toowoomba but he reckons it can be even better
‘‘ WE HAVE SOME GOOD, STRONG FAMILIES DOING GOOD THINGS IN THIS TOWN AND THEY NEED SUPPORT.
WHILE most Toowoombaites are just happy to live in one of the world’s most liveable cities, Daryl Nicholson wants to see the Garden City thrive even more.
He’s already announced his run for Toowoomba Regional Council a couple of years out from the next election.
Mr Nicholson arrived in Toowoomba as a teenager when his father retired from the military and moved his family here in 1978.
Even his first “big mac” here left a lasting impression on the then 14-year-old.
“We had lived in Darwin and Townsville because my father was in the military and there were no McDonald’s (restaurants) there then,” Mr Nicholson recalled.
“I had my first big mac in Toowoomba and I saw (the restaurant’s owner) Clive Armitage and I said ‘I’m going to work for him’ and I did for years.”
Years later Mr Nicholson did a course in radio and another chance meeting was to set him on a new path in Toowoomba.
“I met (Toowoomba businessman) Jim Aspromourgos and got into entertainment and I’ve been pretty much with Jimmy on and off ever since,” he said.
Two years ago Mr Nicholson started Toowoomba 4350tv which is accessible through Facebook and Youtube.
He’s regularly seen walking about town with his trusty phone and stand with which he interviews a wide range of Toowoomba people for his outlet.
“I just love this city and 4350 is a way of getting word out about this city,” he said.
“It’s exciting what’s happening here.”
It was because of his obvious love of Toowoomba that a friend suggested Mr Nicholson try for a seat on council.
“I wasn’t ready then but I’m now setting myself for a run in 2020,” he said.
“A lot of people know that I’m interested in running for council already so I’m happy to put it out there.
“There are a few issues that we still have to address.
“I know the inner-city has a parking problem and we’re facing water problems again.
“We’ve really got to find a solution to our water problem.
“I also think council should really be there to support business and to help business grow.
“We have some good, strong families doing good things in this town and they need support.”
