Oakey to honour Brett Forte
RUGBY LEAGUE: After a roaring success last year, the Defence Service and Police will once again come together for the Brett Forte Memorial Cup.
The match named in honour of the fallen police officer (pictured) drew high praise in 2017 as a way to remember his legacy.
It serves as one of the curtain raisers to the Oakey Bears Australian Legends of League day, and has a special significance for participants.
“We used to play the odd scratch match,” Defence Service representative William Scott said.
“We have a lot of people go away on deployment and the police were busy so it was hard to get enough numbers for a game.
“When everything happened with Brett we were looking at doing scratch match but wanted to make it a bit more significant.
“It was something started last year, and for quite a few weeks after the game I was getting messages from random people saying it was a fantastic game.
“It didn’t overshadow the main game but generated a lot of buzz and interest.
“The significance wouldn’t have been there if we didn’t have the Brett Forte Memorial Cup. Susan (Forte) and her boys were there to present the cup to the two captains on the day and it made it that little bit extra special to play for.”
The match will take place on October 13 at Trevor Mickeborough Oval, Oakey prior to the Australian Legends vs Oakey Legends.
