Curtains for grain silos

National company plans move

THEY’VE been a landmark for motorists driving along Anzac Ave, but the former silos of Graincorp will be eventually removed under new ownership.

Massive self-storage chain Kennards bought the Harristown site for $1.2 million earlier this year as part of its expansion into Toowoomba.

It is understood the company want to move them off-site in the future.

LJ Hooker Commercial agent Luke Darr, who handled the sale, said while the massive silos didn’t prevent Kennards from setting up its new storage facility, the company wanted to further develop the 7000sq m block of land on a busy main road.

“They’ve taken about a 7000sq m block and they’ll be taking half the site to build their business and then either selling or leasing the other half once the silos have been removed,” he said.

“We’re just waiting for the Kennards board to approve a quote that someone have given us.

“I’m interested how they go through that removal process.”

For decades, grain from across the region has been stored and loaded at the site.

Originally the site was used by the Australian Wheat/Barley Board to bag grain in the second decade of the 20th century.

It then passed through the hands of Bulk Grains and Grainco, before being bought by Graincorp in 2003 for a massive $13.5 million.

Mr Darr said Toowoomba had long been in the sights of Kennards, which runs 22 facilities across Australia.

“Kennards have been looking to come here for a pretty long time,” he said.

“They thought that Anzac Ave was the best place for them to be.”

The Chronicle sought comment from Kennards about what it planned to do with the silos, but it didn’t respond in time for deadline.
