Embracing city’s pace

TOUCH OF TOOWOOMBA: Kmart Grand Central, Tuesday, 10am

Kenrick Jones

I’M 29 years old. I’ve been in Toowoomba for two months now, so I’ve moved up here to take on the manager role at this store.

Prior to that I’ve been in Kmart for five years, working in Brisbane. I’m from Rockhampton originally.

I moved from Rockhampton in 2012 and moved down to Brisbane with my previous company and then moved over to Kmart.

I’m really enjoying the role up here. I’ve got quite a bit of family in Toowoomba so it’s worked out really well that they’ve moved me.

What do I love about Toowoomba? I’m really enjoying the weather and the city’s really nice as well. It’s not a big city, but it’s not a small city either. It has everything you need, but I’m also really enjoying the quality of life improvement that I’ve got from being 10 minutes from work, rather than being an hour from work in Brisbane.

It’s been really fantastic.

I’M 21. I’ve lived in Toowoomba probably from the age of four. I’m originally from New South Wales.

I like how people in Toowoomba can appreciate different cultures. I’ve been working at Kmart for four years in February. I’ve actually applied for nursing through university.

Hopefully I will start next year – but I won’t get confirmation until later.

What’s my favourite thing about Toowoomba? Probably the community, the people.

The majority of them are really nice and welcoming, even if you don’t know them you can still have a nice friendly chat with them.

I WAS born and raised in Toowoomba. I haven’t been anywhere else. Same house, same everything. I’ve been at Kmart for four years and three months now.

I just think Toowoomba is a great place. Brisbane’s fantastic because of all the opportunities and things you have there, but it’s a crowded place, everyone’s always too busy to talk or yeah, everything’s got a bit more hustle to it.

Whereas here, everyone seems to be a bit more friendly, everyone has the time to chat with you, and it is and easier city to get around.

I think Toowoomba could do with more opportunities around here.

Other than that, yeah, I love it here. I wouldn’t move anywhere else.

I’ve always been happy at Kmart and I’d like to go further with my career here and work in management.

And I’ve been trialling other opportunities but I’ve found that I’ve been happier here – I don’t know if I’m just comfortable with it or just knowing the company.

What’s one thing I love about Toowoomba?

We’re getting some good coffee places and good places to go for breakfast.
