WHEN Toowoomba man Nick Hannant was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, he immediately took a positive approach to the condition and decided to raise funds for Diabetes Queensland.

He set himself a target of raising $5000 for the cause through The Great Ocean Road 2018 100km walk in Victoria.

Inspired by his son’s approach to his condition, Nick’s father Laurie Hannant has joined in and will do the walk as well.

“We’ve been doing a bit of walking and training pretty hard for the walk,” said Laurie Hannant, a Toowoomba rugby league identity and former Clydesdale player.

“We’ve been walking Redwood Park and Picnic Point.

“The walk is 100km but its over five days.”

As part of their fundraising drive, Laurie and Nick are holding a barefoot lawn bowls afternoon this Saturday at the South Toowoomba Bowls Club from 1pm.

It’s just $5 a player to join in and a multi-raffle draw will be held in conjunction.

“We’ve got 15 prizes in the raffle including the major prize of two nights at a Gold Coast hotel which was donated by the Joe Wagner Group,” Nick explained.

“Even if you don’t want to play bowls, you can come along and buy some raffle tickets and join in the fun.”

Teams of four can be nominated or those wishing to join can simply nominate individually and they will be placed in a team.

Teams and individuals can place their names on the sheet at the club at 331 Hume St or phone 4635 1960 to enter.
