Academy pathways leading to Toowoomba

-

CRICKET: The next batch of potential Queensland superstars have called Toowoomba home this week.

Close to 100 young male and female cricketers have been based at TGS as different Pathway Academy regions come together in camp.

“There’s six academies totalling 108 players, and we brought them in centrally to Toowoomba Grammar which is a great country area,” Queensland Cricket’s Richard Griffiths said.

“On Tuesday we did some fitness testing to get some standards of where they’re at, followed by some basic skills work.

“Yesterday, we did some fielding work, some pychology and nutrition sessions, then some scenario works to try different things and get players out of their comfort zones.

“It’s their first step on the pathway program, so we hope that some of these players will end up playing for the Bulls, Fire or Heat.

“Some of them are from pretty remote country areas. They don’t have access to a lot, so if we can get them all here we can make some big differences in a short amount of time.”

The highlight of the camp happens today, with games played among each other at TGS and Heritage Oval, with it being hoped the skills learnt from the start of the week are transferred onto the field.

The promising boys and girls will also receive another boost with former Australian captain Jodie Fields and current Queensland Fire bowler Georgia Prestwidge making an appearance to work alongside the youngsters.
