THE TAN PLAN

PERFECT YOUR PREP FOR FLAWLESS BRONZE SKIN

- WORDS: AMBER MACPHERSON

As the layers are shed and limbs are bared, the beauty buzz is all about sun-kissed skin.

But before you reach for your tanning mitt or book in a spray tan, it’s important to follow some tan care tips to ensure your end result is more bronzed babe than Halloween pumpkin. Tanology director Jodi Bibra says preparation should begin about a day before you tan.

“Preparation is everything. Ensure your tanning prep is not a rush job,” Jodi says.

The first step is to shave between 12 and 24 hours beforehand, then exfoliate all over so the tan has some fresh skin to cling to.

Jodi also recommends moisturising the body from head to toe.

“Give your skin a big drink of moisture the night before to ensure your tan goes on flawlessly.”

On tanning day, don’t wear any perfume, deodorant or make-up as it will act as a barrier. However, it is important to apply a light coat of moisturiser to your elbows, knees, tops of feet, ankles, wrists and the back of your hands to avoid the tan collecting in these spots.

“This will help form a barrier so the tan will not grab in these areas for the dreaded orange look,” Jodi says.

“Make sure you wear something dark and loose after application.

“Avoid doing anything strenuous while your tan is processing so you avoid sweating.

“Try to avoid turning on taps as water can easily splash on to your tan — use wipes to clean your hands instead.

“When your tan has processed, wash away the bronzer with soap or shower gel. If this is not done well, your tan can look streaky. Next, apply a final coat of moisturiser or body shimmer and show off your bronzed look.”

In the days following your tanning session, Jodi says to moisturise every day and top up any patchy areas with bronzer.

“Bronzer is the perfect product for blending any unwanted tanning errors,” she says. “Avoid swimming pools and spas as the chlorine will strip your tan and make it patchy. Hot showers and baths are also a big no. Try lukewarm showers to keep your tan looking fresher.”

Before booking in for your next tan or popping on the solution again, Jodi recommends using her tanGO tan removal cloth to erase the evidence of your last effort.

“The wetter your tanGO the less tan it will remove, so you can use it as a blending tool halfway through your tan, then squeeze it a little more at the end of your tan to remove build up,” she says.
