WILL IT ALL COME OUT IN THE WASH?

- – The Sun

No poo may sound a little unsavoury, but it’s actually an innocent term for forgoing shampoo.

While people are divided over whether the method actually works, some claim it’s “transformed” their locks.

The No Poo method involves ditching your shampoo and washing your hair with either just water or a combination of natural products. Baking soda and apple cider vinegar have both been suggested as potential replacements.

According to the official No Poo site, the harsh chemicals often included in haircare products “strip” hair of its natural oils, or sebum. The sebaceous oil glands sense the hair drying out and are “triggered to release extra sebum”. This causes an overproduction, making the hair appear greasy and leading people to wash their hair all over again. The site describes this as a “vicious cycle”. Obviously, advocates of the No Poo method believe that shampoo is bad for your hair.

But according to Health, there isn’t any scientific proof to back up this claim. Dr Nicole Rogers, Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Tulane University in the US, said: “For the average person with healthy, untreated hair, there is no evidence that the simple act of shampooing, so long as it is with the appropriate ingredients for your hair, will cause damage.”

She adds that sebum production is actually “affected by various things including hormones, diet, and genetics” and that “the simple act of not washing your hair less is not going to slow it down”.
