High school students get start in film industry
WILLIAM Stallman has a dream of working in film and television and the University of Southern Queensland has given him the chance to get started.
The Toowoomba Grammar School student joined more than 30 other teenagers from across southeast Queensland to attend the Film, Television and Radio Two-Day Experience at USQ Springfield.
The school holiday camp was designed to provide students with hands-on experience and expose them to careers in the industry.
The students worked in groups to produce a short film, television or radio show.
They were taken through the entire production process, from developing story and show concepts and shooting and recording, to editing and post-production.
“I am really interested and passionate about film and television, so it was a good opportunity to learn how to make films, everything from shooting to editing,” he said.
“The lecturers and current students at USQ were very supportive and provided a lot of insight into the film industry.
“I am very grateful to USQ for this experience.”
As well as working closely with staff, the students got to hear from Channel Seven weather presenter Tony Auden, who shared his experiences and insights.
Acting Head of Arts and Communication School associate professor Jessica Gildersleeve said it was great to see motivated and creative high school students eager to explore their passion.
“Many of these students are starting to think about their post-school options and career choices, so it’s very important for them to understand the pathways available to higher education and get an early taste of what might be expected of them in the industry,” she said.
