RACING: Favourite backers made a seamless start to the night’s racing after singling out former Victorian mare Bequeathed as one of the best bets on Saturday’s seven-race Clifford Park card.
Bequeathed ($1.90) made a winning start to her Queensland racing days when she resumed with an all-the-way performance in the Garden City Black And White Class 1 Handicp (1300m).
The Lonhro four-year-old had a 11⁄4 lengths to spare on the line for jockey Nozi Tomizawa from solid-finishing First Witness ($21).
By The Law ($8) held on well to be a long head back third after looking to challenge the winner at the 200m mark.
Bequeathed hadn’t raced since finishing third at Sale in June and is the latest in a lengthy line of ex-Victorian gallopers who have made a successful move to Ben Currie’s Toowoomba stable.
“She is raced by Peter Franklin from Melbourne who has been a good client of mine,” Currie said.
“He has sent me a number of mares now like Amthaal and Theatrics with good residual form down south and they’ve all had success.
“This mare had good provincial-one form in Victoria and they are well placed in these type of races.
“We were a little bit worried about her fitness first-up today over 1300m.
“We had a preference for a 1000m race but finished up going this way.
“She might have been a gallop short but she stuck it out well.”
Currie made it two wins for the evening when Fomo resumed with an authoritative display in the Wearing Memories Class 3 Handicap (1000m).
■ TOOWOOMBA fiveyear-old Niccanova backed up his Brisbane Summer Carnival claims with a timely return to winning form in Saturday’s Doomben Open Handicap (1350m) for trainer Steve Tregea.
Niccanova disposed of race leader Fiery Heights for a 21⁄4-length victory on the way to a possible start in the $300,000 Bernborough Handicap (1600m) at Doomben on December 29.
