St Andrew’s breast care nurses do amazing things

-

ST ANDREW’S Toowoomba Hospital is fortunate to have three breast care nurses on staff to ensure patients are well supported around the clock, year–round.

One breast cancer nurse, Gaye Foot, shared what a day in the life as a nurse is like.

What does a typical day look like for you?

St Andrew’s Hospital can offer patients a comprehensive range of breast care services from diagnosis, surgery and treatment to wellness.

My day starts early with preparing and supporting new patients who are scheduled for breast surgery, and answering any questions they may have.

I then visit post–operative patients on the ward, fit them with a new supportive bra while they heal, and support them when they receive the results from their surgery.

I also support patients going through radiation or chemotherapy treatment in the St Andrew’s Cancer Centre, and I provide free wellness consultations for patients at the end of their treatment.

What is the most rewarding part of your role?

There is so much we can offer patients with a breast cancer diagnosis.

My role is so rewarding, because I can help patients through one of the most traumatic times of their lives and hopefully really make a difference by keeping them better informed and feeling supported.
