1586 - The trial of Mary, Queen of Scots, begins.

1869 - Thomas Edison filed for a patent on his first invention. The electric machine was used for counting votes for the U.S. Congress, however the Congress did not buy it.

1896 - Lawrence Wells makes the fateful decision to split his exploratio­n party, leading to the deaths of two men.

1899 - The Boer War began in South Africa between the British and the Boers of the Transvaal and Orange Free State.

1906 - The Coat of Arms of New South Wales is granted by Royal Warrant.

1942 - The Battle of Cape Esperance, during World War II, began in the Solomon Islands.

1987 - A huge sonar exploratio­n of Loch Ness in Scotland fails to find any sign of the Loch Ness monster.

1994 - US troops in Haiti took control of the National Palace.

1994 - Iraqi troops began moving away from the Kuwaiti border.
