Beams trade rumour puzzles Lions coach

- ROB FORSAITH

AFL: Brisbane coach Chris Fagan is yet to speak with star Dayne Beams regarding a report he wants out, noting such a request would be a major surprise to everybody at the club.

Beams, whose current contract runs until the end of the 2020 season, reiterated his commitment to the Lions during an emotional speech at the club’s best-and-fairest night.

But AFL Trade Radio reported the midfielder will soon request a trade to Collingwood.

Fagan, who is close with Beams and saw him on Saturday at a fundraising event, said there has been no trade request and the Lions would be “surprised” if one is lodged before Wednesday’s deadline.

“He’s not mentioned that to me ... I’m puzzled by it. I’ve had no discussion with anybody at our club about it,” Fagan told radio station SEN.

“I’ll probably have a chat with Dayne to see if there’s anything in it but I don’t want to insult him either.

“Because I’m pretty sure we have a relationship where if he was feeling that way, he’d come and chat to me about it.

“So I’m more inclined to think I would have heard from him by now (if he was contemplating a trade request).”

Fagan wouldn’t be drawn on Beams’ potential value at the trade table.

He is yet to speak with football manager David Noble or anybody at the club about a potential deal, noting it simply wasn’t on anybody’s agenda.

“As far as I’m concerned there’s nothing to discuss,” Fagan said.

“There is no plan for him to not be part of our plans.

“I don’t think anything is going to emerge in the days ahead but footy is full of surprises.”

Beams started his career at the Magpies but shifted to Brisbane during the 2014 trade period. He wanted to be closer to his ill father, who died earlier this year. If Beams departs Brisbane in the AFL trade period it will deliver a devastating blow to the club, according to Nick Dal Santo.

Beams is contracted to the Lions until the end of the 2020 season but AFL Trade Radio is reporting he will soon request a trade to Collingwood.

“This is devastating. To (potentially) lose someone of Dayne Beams’ ilk,” Dal Santo said on AFL Trade Radio.
